Improvisation will be the name of the game when 25 national and regional rock acts stretch their musical wings at the Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach this weekend.
The fifth annual High Tide Jamfest will feature music
on four stages inside the Rudder and outside on the tented deck tonight and Saturday. Admission is free.
Organizer Vikki Walls said she is looking forward to seeing and hearing the Brooklyn-based group New York Funk Exchange shake things up, in addition to many other bands.
Audience members will be turned on to groups from around the country, but Walls said local fans are also adamant about supporting their hometown heroes. Among the regional favorites?
“Hippocampus, Three Legged Fox,” she said. “And of course everyone loves Da Rezarekt.”
While instrumental prowess is all well and good, Walls said she slipped one particular band into the mix for the simple fact that they write good songs
. The Dallas-based act SleeperStar is far from a jam band; it readily describes its music as “alternative-pop-rock.”
The group is using its cross-country outing to preview songs from its new album, “Just Another Ghost
,” which will be released June 22. “They’re on tour and I wanted to help them,” Walls said. “I love them.”
Other upcoming festivals at the Rudder include the fourth annual Chickfest (May 7-8) and the first-ever Michael Jackson
Festival (May 21-22), featuring Michael Firestone of the Las Vegas tribute show “The Man in the Mirror.” While the rock festivals are free, tickets for the Jackson event cost $15 in advance and $18 at the door.
Walls said she also has a non-festival event set to take place at the Rudder on May 14 that may interest “American Idol” fans; dreadlocked vocalist Jason Castro, who was the fourth-place finalist on the television show’s 2008 season, will play a free concert in support of his debut album.
Da Rezarekt's FIRST live CD available now at live shows or at the online store. We are only making a limited supply of these, and when they're gone they're gone. Get 'em while we got 'em!!!!
